Yoga for Young Children (5-12 years)

Yoga for Young Children (5-12 years)

In the fast-paced life that is being led by everyone, childhood might be the last sanctuary for a human being. It is therefore essential to introduce the child to Yoga at this age—so that they may be able to preserve the flame of their innocence throughout life. Apart from this, planned and well-directed training can ensure healthy physical development, and sustained practice can aid in the prevention of problems later in life. Children must therefore be introduced to Yoga at a young age.

Children who are five- to eight-years old can do a few asanas, but must not be made to do them in a formal, structured format. Eight-years and above is when proper training can be initiated, as some amount of muscular strength has been acquired, and is combined with the suppleness of childhood. However, compulsory Yoga classes would be inappropriate—at this age, children must be allowed to enjoy what they are doing, and they must not be forced. If the first acquaintance is casual and enjoyable, later interactions with Yoga will be enthusiastically received, and the child will treat it not as something to be feared, but rather as something she looks forward to.
